The minimum wage is the lowest monthly or hourly basic pay an employer may legally give an employee in Malaysia, set nationally by the government through a Minimum Wages Order. It applies to most private-sector workers, including many foreign workers, though certain categories such as apprentices may be treated differently. The rate is reviewed periodically and can differ over time or by employer size during transition phases. Basic wage for this purpose usually excludes overtime, allowances, and bonuses. Paying below the minimum is an offence. The current rate and coverage are subject to the latest rules.
