Want to start selling food online but scared about SSM, tax and halal stuff

I make quite good kuih and frozen food, friends say I should sell online. But I'm blur about whether I need to register SSM, declare to LHDN, and get halal cert. Don't want to kena problem later. Where to start?

From my experience starting a home food biz, start simple and legal. Register a sole proprietorship with SSM, it's cheap (around RM30-60 a year) and lets you open a business bank account and look legit to customers. For food, you'll want the basic food handler training and typhoid jab, and if you cook at home, look into the relevant local council (MPSJ/DBKL etc) requirements. Halal cert from JAKIM is optional and can be a longer process, many small sellers start without it but clearly state ingredients. On tax, once you earn, you must declare income to LHDN, keep records from day one. Begin small, test demand, then formalise as you grow. Talk to SSM counter or a small biz advisor for your specific case.

I sell frozen kuih and here's what I did. First, SSM registration as sole prop, super easy online via ezBiz, gives you credibility and needed for many online marketplaces. Keep proper records of sales and expenses from the start, because income from the business is taxable and you'll declare it to LHDN yearly, don't wait until it's messy. Food safety: get your food handler cert and health check, and follow your local council's home-based food rules. Halal cert is not compulsory but helps reach more customers; you can start without and apply later once volume justifies it. Start on WhatsApp and a Facebook page, test recipes and demand before spending big. When unsure on tax specifics, a quick consult with an accountant saves headaches.
