How does the Sumbangan Tunai Rahmah (STR) actually get paid out?

My parents are B40 and I'm trying to help them apply for the government cash aid. A bit confused about STR, how to check eligibility, when the payments come, and whether they need a bank account or it's over the counter. Anyone helped their family with this before?

I settle this for my parents every year. STR (formerly BR1M/BKM) is applied and checked through the official LHDN STR portal, you register or update their details there, income bracket, dependents, etc. Payments come in phases across the year, usually a few instalments, announced by the government. Best is bank account (their MyKad-linked account) because it's credited directly and safest, but there IS an over-the-counter option at certain banks for those without accounts, they'll need MyKad. Double check their details are updated on the portal because outdated info is the number one reason payments get stuck. Keep an eye on official announcements for the payment dates each phase. When in doubt, the LHDN hotline can confirm their specific status.

Helped my mak with this. Key things I learned: eligibility is based on household income and category (single, or households with kids), and you check/apply on the official STR portal, don't use random third-party sites, scams are everywhere. If your parents already received before, often it auto-continues but you should still verify and update their info during the appeal/update window each year. Payment is by phases, and direct bank credit is the smoothest. If they don't have a bank account, honestly help them open one, it makes every future aid easier. Watch out for SMS scams pretending to be STR asking for bank details, the government never asks for your TAC or password. Stick to official channels only.
