Is it worth switching from a GLC to a startup in KL?

I left a GLC after 6 years to join a fintech startup in 2021. Honestly the first year was scary lah, no more guaranteed year-end bonus and the pace was gila fast. But I learned more in 18 months than my whole GLC time, and my market value shot up. The trade-off is real though: when the startup did a layoff round last year, half my team went. If you have loans and family to support, keep an emergency fund of at least 6 months before jumping. I don't regret it but go in with eyes open.

I did the opposite, went from startup back to a GLC and I'm happier. The startup pay looked nicer on paper but the OT was unpaid and burnout was terrible. At my GLC the increment is small but steady, medical covers my whole family, and the work-life balance means I actually see my kids. Depends what stage of life you're at honestly. If you're young and no commitments, chase the growth. If you value stability and benefits, the extra 20% may not be worth the stress. Sit down and list your real priorities first.
