New job, everyone goes lunch together and I feel forced to join and spend daily

Started a new job a month ago. The team goes out for lunch together every day at nicer places, easily RM20-30 per meal. I'm trying to save money and prefer to tapau cheaper food. But I'm scared I'll be seen as antisocial. How?

From my experience, you don't need to join every single day to fit in. The trick is balance, join the group lunch maybe 2 times a week so you build relationships, and on other days politely say you're catching up on work or bringing your own food. Nobody sane judges a colleague for eating a home-packed meal; if they do, that says more about them. When you do join, you can order lighter/cheaper items, no rule says you must match their spending. Being social a couple of times a week is enough to be part of the team. Save the rest. Over time people respect that you're disciplined with money. Relationships are built through being genuine and helpful at work, not just expensive lunches.

I faced this as a new joiner too. What worked: I joined the team lunch once or twice a week to bond, and on other days brought my own food or ate cheap without making a big announcement about saving money (people don't need to know your budget). If asked, a light 'I'm cutting back a bit this month' or 'saving for something' is totally normal and often others quietly relate. Some days I'd tag along but just order a drink. Building rapport matters early in a new job, so don't isolate completely, but daily RM25 lunches add up to hundreds a month, that's real money. Find your rhythm. Genuine colleagues care that you're friendly and reliable, not how much you spend on lunch.
