Cross border to work in Singapore - worth the SGD but the grind?
JB folks, is working in Singapore really worth it? The SGD to RM conversion looks amazing but I hear about the 4am wake up, causeway jam, and high living cost there. For a mid-level engineer, is it worth relocating or commuting?

Worked in SG 4 years, commuting from JB first year then relocated. The money IS good - even after everything, I saved way more than my KL peers, the SGD exchange (roughly 3.4x) is real and helps a lot if you spend/save in RM. BUT the causeway commute nearly killed me: waking 4.30am, back home 8-9pm, zero life, always tired. If you commute, you trade your health and time for the exchange rate. My advice: if young, no kids, take the SG job but RELOCATE and stay there to have a life, budget for the high rent (this eats a big chunk). If you have family in JB and want to see them, commuting works short term but plan an exit before you burn out. The experience and savings can set you up nicely if you are disciplined. Dont lifestyle-inflate in SGD.
For engineer, SG experience on your resume is valuable even if you return. The standards, exposure to bigger projects, and MNC network helped me negotiate a much higher package when I came back to KL later. Even 2-3 years worth it for the CV boost alone lah.

Watch out for the trap of never coming back. Many stay for the SGD, lifestyle creep, then cant afford to move back because RM salary feels tiny after. Have a clear goal - save X amount, gain Y experience, then decide. Also your Malaysian EPF stops, plan your retirement savings yourself. Money good but have a plan, dont drift.
The upcoming RTS Link (JB-Woodlands MRT) will change the commute game a lot, cut it to minutes vs hours on the causeway. If you can hold out or your workplace near Woodlands, commuting becomes much more bearable. Worth factoring into your decision if you prefer to stay JB side with family.
