Resign first then find job, or find job first?

My workplace so toxic already, I really want to quit. But scary no income after that. What did you all actually do?

Rule of thumb in the Malaysia job market: find job first THEN resign, unless your mental health already collapsing. Reason is many companies here still pandang serong at unemployed candidates, they ask why you jobless like got something wrong with you. Also notice period usually 1 to 2 months, so you got plenty of time to interview while still employed and still getting paid. BUT if the toxic place is seriously wrecking your health, no amount of money worth it. I once quit without offer, took 3 months to land the next one, savings kena hantam, but my sanity came back. Just make sure you got at least 6 months buffer before you do anything drastic.

Before you resign, try apply for internal transfer to another department first. Sometimes same company but different team is a totally different vibe. Cheaper and less risky than starting all over somewhere new. I did that and my whole work life improved.

I resigned raw with no offer during covid, worst decision of my life, took 7 months and the market was totally dead. Learn from my mistake, secure something first even if it's not the perfect job. You can always jump again later.

Toxic got degree lah. If it's just an annoying boss, tahan while you search quietly. But if it's harassment or the stress giving you real health problem, then GTFO. Health cannot buy back with money. Know where your line is.
