Stamp Duty

Housing

Stamp duty is a tax on legal documents, most commonly the property transfer (MOT) and the loan agreement when buying a home. For property transfers it is charged on a tiered scale based on the property's price or market value, so higher-priced homes pay a higher percentage. Loan agreement stamp duty is charged as a percentage of the loan amount. The government sometimes offers exemptions or discounts for first-time buyers or lower-priced homes. Documents must be stamped within a set period to be legally valid. Rates, tiers, and exemptions are set by law and subject to the latest rules.
