Wedding budget blowing up, how to tell parents we can't afford a 500-guest dinner

My parents want a big Chinese wedding dinner, easily 40-50 tables. Me and my fiancee prefer something smaller and to save for a house downpayment. How to have this conversation without hurting their feelings or losing face?

We faced the exact same tug-of-war. My advice: don't say a flat 'we can't afford it', instead present your priorities and a plan. We showed our parents a simple budget: dinner cost vs house downpayment, and proposed a mid-size dinner plus keeping some savings. Also remember the ang pao from guests typically covers much of the dinner, so ask your parents to help estimate that realistically. If they really want the big guest list, some parents are willing to contribute to the extra tables, that's a fair conversation. Involve them early, listen to their 'face' concerns, and find the middle. A smaller heartfelt wedding is totally fine, but harmony with parents matters long term, so negotiate with respect.

From my experience, the key is to separate 'their guests' from 'your budget'. Chinese wedding dinners are often as much for the parents' social circle as for you, so acknowledge that first. What worked for us: we sat with both sets of parents and framed it as 'we want to honour you and also start our marriage financially stable'. We offered a compromise, a reasonable number of tables, and let the parents' guests' ang pao offset the cost of their portion of tables. Remember ang pao usually covers a big chunk of the dinner cost here, so 40 tables isn't always as scary as it sounds. Talk numbers openly and give them a role in decisions so nobody loses face.
