Kahwin budget spiralling, how to keep cost sane without malu?

Planning our wedding, both families expect a big do. Quotations for hall, catering, hantaran, photographer, baju all adding up scary. We prefer simple but scared relatives judge. How to keep budget reasonable but still meaningful?

Got married 2 years ago, kept it under control and zero regret. Biggest lesson: the wedding is ONE day, your marriage is forever - dont start life in debt to impress relatives who wont pay your bills later. What we did: (1) trimmed the guest list ruthlessly (fewer heads = biggest saving on catering, which is the main cost). (2) Booked a community hall / dewan instead of fancy hotel. (3) Hired a talented junior photographer instead of the big name - photos still cantik. (4) DIY deco with family help, actually became a fun bonding activity. (5) Simple hantaran, quality over quantity. Be upfront with parents that you two are paying and set the number together. Most guests remember the food and the vibe, not how much you spent lah.

Book vendors early for better price and negotiate package deals (photo + video + album bundle cheaper). Off-peak months also cheaper. And track every deposit in a spreadsheet, senang forget what you already paid and double spend.

On the relative-judging fear - honestly nobody remembers or cares as much as you think. The ones who judge your simple wedding are not the ones you should please. My cousin blew RM80k and divorced in 2 years; another had a sweet RM15k kampung wedding, still happily married. Perspective matters bro.

Set a total budget FIRST then allocate, dont just collect quotations and add up (thats how it spirals). We split into % - catering 40%, venue 20%, attire 15%, photo 10%, rest for deco/misc. Once a category over, cut from somewhere else. Discipline lah. Also weekday or lunch reception cheaper than weekend dinner.
