Worth upgrading to fibre 500Mbps or is 100Mbps enough for a small family?

Currently on 100Mbps Unifi at home, family of four. Kids do online class, we stream Netflix and I WFH with video calls. Telco keeps pushing me to upgrade to 300 or 500Mbps. Do we actually need the speed?

We're also a family of four and 100Mbps handles everything fine, kids' online class, two people on Teams calls, and streaming at night, no drama. The telcos push upgrades because it's more revenue, but honestly most homes don't feel the difference above 100 for these activities. What made a real difference for us was upgrading the router and adding a mesh node upstairs, because our lag was a coverage problem, not a speed problem. If your calls freeze, first check WiFi signal, wired connection for the WFH laptop, and how old your router is. Save the extra RM30-50 a month unless you genuinely hit the ceiling, like heavy simultaneous 4K plus big downloads. Test your real speed at speedtest during peak hours before deciding.

From my experience, for a family of four doing online class, Netflix and WFH video calls, 100Mbps is usually plenty, speed isn't your bottleneck there. Video calls need maybe 3-5Mbps each, 4K Netflix around 25Mbps, so even simultaneous use fits within 100. What actually causes lag is often poor WiFi coverage, not the plan speed, an old router or dead spots matter more. Before upgrading, try a mesh WiFi system or reposition your router; that fixes most 'slow internet' complaints. Upgrade to 300/500 only if you regularly do big downloads, run a home server, or have many heavy users at once. Don't pay for speed you can't feel. Ask the telco if the upgrade is truly needed for your usage, or just fix your WiFi.
