Is switching from a postpaid telco to a cheaper MVNO / prepaid plan actually worth it in Malaysia?

I've been on a big telco postpaid plan paying around RM100 a month for years out of habit. Friends keep telling me the newer cheaper plans and MVNOs give the same unlimited data for like RM30-40. But I'm worried about coverage, network speed and losing my number. For those who actually switched, was it worth it or did you regret it?

I switched from a RM98 big-telco postpaid to a RM35 MVNO plan two years ago and saved over RM750 a year with almost no downside, but let me be specific about the tradeoffs. Most of the cheaper MVNOs here actually ride on the major networks' infrastructure, so in Klang Valley and major towns the coverage and speed are basically identical because it's the same towers. Where you MIGHT notice a difference is network prioritisation during congestion, at a packed stadium or during peak hours the big postpaid customers sometimes get priority over MVNO users, so speeds can dip, and in very rural kampung areas coverage depends on which host network the MVNO uses. You do NOT lose your number, MNP (Mobile Number Portability) lets you port your existing number over, takes a day or two. My advice, check which host network the MVNO uses and pick one that runs on whichever network already works well where you live and balik kampung, then port over and pocket the RM60/month difference. For 90% of normal users it's a no-brainer worth it.

Depends heavily on where you live and travel. In the city the cheap plans are great, same speed same everything. But I balik kampung to a more rural area in the interior and there the difference is real, my big-telco line still had bars where friends on certain budget MVNOs had nothing. So before switching, ask which underlying network the plan uses and check that specific network's coverage map for your kampung and workplace. If both places are on a strong network, switch and save. If your kampung is a coverage dead zone except on one particular telco, maybe keep that one for peace of mind.

Porting your number is easier than people fear, don't let that stop you. I used MNP to keep my number of 15 years when switching, you just apply with the new provider, they handle it, and there's a short window where it transfers, usually within a working day or two, with minimal downtime. Just don't terminate your old line yourself first, let the porting process handle it or you'll lose the number. Keep some credit/no outstanding bills on the old account so the port isn't blocked. Once done, same number, way lower bill, zero regret.

Consider a middle path if you're nervous, some big telcos now have their own cheaper digital sub-brands and no-frills plans to compete with the MVNOs. You can sometimes get a much cheaper plan while staying on the premium network with full priority, best of both worlds. I moved to my telco's own budget line, dropped from RM90-ish to around RM45, kept the top-tier coverage and priority, and didn't have to worry about host-network questions at all. Compare these against the pure MVNOs, sometimes the incumbent's own cheap plan is only slightly more but gives you full peace of mind.

Honestly after switching my only real regret is not doing it years earlier, that's RM60 a month I burned for nothing out of pure inertia. The customer service on cheaper plans can be more app-based and less hand-holding, so if you're the type who likes walking into a physical store to complain, adjust your expectations, most support is via app and chat. But for straightforward users that's fine. Do a one-month trial mentality, port over, live with it for a month, and if coverage genuinely fails you where you need it, you can always switch again. The savings compound, RM60 a month is over RM7,000 in ten years sitting in your pocket instead of the telco's.

One thing to check, the fine print on unlimited data. Many cheap unlimited plans have a fair usage policy or throttle your speed after a certain amount of high-speed data, or cap hotspot/tethering. If you tether a lot for work or stream heavily, read the terms, because unlimited RM35 might become crawling-slow after 30-50GB. For normal browsing, YouTube, WhatsApp and Grab it's totally fine. I got caught assuming unlimited meant unlimited high-speed and my tethering got throttled mid-month. Match the plan to your actual usage pattern, not just the headline price.
