What are the real pitfalls of driving balik kampung during Raya that nobody warns first-timers about?

This is my first year driving back myself from KL to Kota Bharu for Raya instead of taking the bus or flight. Everyone just says leave early, but I want to know the actual pitfalls, the small things that catch people off guard on these long balik kampung drives. What went wrong for you and what do you wish you'd known?

KL to Kota Bharu is no joke, that's the East Coast run and the pitfalls are different from the North-South Highway. First, don't blindly trust Waze timing during Raya, a normal 7-hour drive can become 11-13 hours, and Waze will sometimes route you through kampung roads to save time where you'll get stuck behind lorries with nowhere to overtake. Second, the R&Rs on the way run out of food and the toilets become horror by afternoon, so eat and refuel whenever your tank hits half, don't wait for empty. Third, the stretch through Gua Musang and the winding hilly parts is exhausting and accident-prone at night, so if you can, drive that portion in daylight and take a proper 20-minute nap at an R&R if you feel drowsy, microsleep kills people every Raya. Prepare a car emergency kit, snacks, water, phone power bank, and download offline maps because signal drops in the interior.

Small but real pitfall, prepare for the toilet and food situation especially if you have kids or elderly parents. The R&R toilets get disgusting and long queues by midday, so I keep tissue, hand sanitiser, and a portable urinal for the kids in the car. Pack your own food and lots of water because R&R stalls jack up prices and run out. Also bring plastic bags for rubbish and motion sickness, the winding Gua Musang road makes people vomit. Little preparations like these turn a miserable 12-hour crawl into something bearable for the whole family.

Nobody warns you about the toll and fuel budget adding up, and Touch n Go / SmartTAG lanes matter. Keep at least RM100-150 on your card because reloading at a jammed R&R with everyone queuing is painful, and some East Coast stretches still have manual booths. Also the govt sometimes gives toll-free periods during festive season so check the announcement, could save you a bit. And petrol, fill up before you leave the Klang Valley because kampung-route stations run dry or have long queues during the exodus. I got caught at quarter tank once with a 40-minute queue at a Petronas, never again.

The biggest pitfall for me was not servicing my car beforehand and my tyre nearly gave way near Temerloh. Before any long balik kampung, check your tyres including the spare, brake pads, engine oil, coolant and battery, ideally a week before so there's time to fix anything. Bengkels are all closed during Raya so a breakdown on the highway means waiting hours for PLUS patrol or a tow, in the heat, with your whole family in the car. Spend the RM150-200 on a proper pre-trip service, it's the cheapest insurance you'll buy. Also make sure your Touch n Go has enough balance and your RFID is working, topping up in a jam is a nightmare.

Timing your departure is an art during Raya balik kampung. Everyone says leave early but if you leave at the same time as everyone, like the evening after the last working day, you'll sit in the worst jam. I now either leave at 4-5am when the roads are still empty, or leave a full day earlier and take unpaid leave, the peace is worth it. Coming back to KL, avoid the last day of the holiday, I come back one day earlier to dodge the return crush. Check the JPJ / PLUS traffic dispersal schedule they publish before festive season, it tells you the predicted heavy hours.

Drowsiness is the real killer, not the traffic, and I learned this the hard way. On my first drive I pushed through tiredness to reach faster and I actually dozed for a split second on a straight stretch, jolted awake terrified. Now my rule is stop every 2 hours no matter what, splash water on my face, do a few stretches, drink kopi. If you're the only driver for 10+ hours, plan to leave super early morning after a full night's sleep, never straight after a full work day. Better to reach 2 hours later than not reach at all, your family is in that car.
