How to survive daily KL jam commute without going gila?

New job in KL city, I stay Kajang side. The daily jam is killing me, 1.5 hours one way sometimes. Drive, LRT/MRT, or Grab? What combo you all use to make the KL commute bearable and cheaper?

Kajang to city, the MRT is your friend, seriously consider park-and-ride. What worked for me on a similar route: drive to the nearest MRT/LRT station, park at the station car park (cheaper than city parking and no toll stress), then train into the city. You skip the worst of the jam, you can rest/read/nap on the train instead of gripping the steering wheel in traffic, and total cost (parking + train) is often less than petrol + toll + city parking + car wear. The MRT from Kajang line goes right into the city core now. If your office is near a station, this is a game changer. I got back 1.5 hours of my life daily and my stress dropped massively. Driving all the way only makes sense if your office has free parking and you leave super early/late to dodge peak. Grab daily is too expensive long term, use it only when you are late or it rains. Also try flexi hours if your company allows, leaving at 7am vs 8am is night and day difference in KL traffic.

Mentally, reframe the commute time. On the train I turned it into podcast/audiobook/language learning time, so it stopped feeling wasted. In the car stuck in jam I was just angry, on the train I was learning or resting. That mindset shift plus the train saved my sanity. The KL jam is a fact of life, control what you can, let go of the rest.

Calculate the true cost of driving daily, petrol + toll + parking + wear and tear + your stress. When I added it up it was shocking, easily RM800+ a month. The train plus occasional Grab was way cheaper and I sold my second car eventually. Do the math, the convenience of driving is more expensive than it feels.

Negotiate flexible or hybrid arrangement if you can, even 1-2 days work from home a week cuts your commute pain and cost dramatically. Post-pandemic many KL companies allow it, just ask. Also flexi start time, I shifted to 7.30am-4.30pm and the difference in jam is unreal. The jam is worst 8-9am, if you can dodge that window you save an hour easily.
