Do I really need to register SSM for my small online business?

I just sell some stuff on Shopee and Instagram from home, part time. A friend said must register with SSM or illegal. Is it true even for small side income? What's the process and cost if yes? Don't want trouble.

Yes, if you're carrying on a business (selling to make profit, even part time online), you're generally required to register with SSM, and running an unregistered business can attract penalties. The good news it's cheap and easy. Process: (1) Register a sole proprietorship (enterprise) via SSM's online system (EzBiz), you pick a trading name or use your own name, fill in the business nature (e.g. online retail), and pay the small yearly fee (very affordable, plus a bit more if you register a trade name). (2) You get a business registration cert, which you then use to open a business bank account, apply for platform seller verification, and for any grants or micro-financing. (3) Renew it yearly. Registering also protects you and looks more legit to customers. Some marketplaces are also tightening seller verification, so having SSM helps. It's genuinely a low barrier, do it properly from the start. Confirm the current fees and steps on the official SSM/EzBiz portal.

Just to add, registering also matters for tax. Business income is taxable, and once you registered and keep proper records, filing is straightforward, you declare business income under your personal tax. At small scale you likely below any SST registration threshold, so don't worry about SST yet, that's for bigger turnover. Keep simple records of sales and expenses from day one, senang bila tax season. Confirm tax specifics with LHDN, but yes SSM first is the right move.

I registered mine on EzBiz from home, whole thing done online in maybe 30 minutes, murah je the yearly fee. Best part after that I could open a business bank account which makes tracking sales way easier and looks pro to customers. Also senang nak apply grant or SME stuff later, they all ask for SSM. Just remember to renew every year, kalau lupa it lapses. No reason not to register, it's cheap peace of mind.
