After SPM, should my son go matriculation, STPM or foundation?

I went through this recently. The honest answer depends on his study style and your budget. Matrikulasi is subsidised and short, great if offered, but the intake and course quota can be competitive. STPM is free and highly respected, but it's demanding and results come later, which can delay uni entry. Private foundation is smoothest and lets him start degree faster, but the fees add up and it's usually locked to that college. Since money is a concern and he wants engineering, I'd push for matrik first, STPM as backup. Whatever you pick, look into JPA, Yayasan and Petronas scholarships and PTPTN loan. Talk to a school counsellor too, they know the latest intake details.

From my experience with my two kids, if he can get into Matrikulasi, take it, it's cheap, one year, and a recognised path into public universities for engineering. STPM is tougher and longer (18 months) but it's globally recognised like A-Levels and keeps options open, good if he's a strong independent studier. Foundation at a private college is the most flexible and fastest but usually ties him to that particular uni's degree and costs more. For a middle income family aiming at engineering, matrik or STPM into a public uni gives the best value by far. Let him choose based on how he studies. Also apply for PTPTN and scholarships early regardless of path.
