How to answer "what is your expected salary" without lowballing myself?

Got 3 interviews lined up this week for marketing exec roles in KL. Everytime they ask expected salary I freeze and quote too low, then regret. Current gaji RM4000. How to answer properly?

Give a range, not a single number. I always say "Based on my research for this role and my 5 years experience, I am looking at RM5000 to RM5800, but I am open to discuss depending on the full package." This anchors high but shows flexibility. Never say your current salary unless forced - and now under the law they cannot pressure you. If they push, ask "may I know the budget range for this position?" Turn it around. I moved from RM4200 to RM5500 using this exact line. Practice say it out loud so tak nervous.

Rule of thumb bila switch job, ask for 20-30% more than current. You at RM4000 so aim RM4800-5200. Companies expect this when you jump, they wont blink. If you ask same as current, they think you desperate lor.

Research the company size first. MNC can pay more, local SME budget tighter. I quote different range depending who I interview with. And always let them mention number first if you can - "I would love to hear what range you have in mind." Whoever says first sometimes lose leverage.

One tip - dont just look at basic. Ask about bonus structure, EPF above statutory, medical, parking, flexi. Sometimes lower basic but better perks. I chose a job RM200 less basic but got 3 month guaranteed bonus, worth it liao.
