Adopting a stray cat from the street, what health checks first?

There's a friendly stray kitten around my apartment in Cheras that keeps following me. I want to adopt it but never had a pet before. Worried about diseases, fleas, and whether it's safe around my toddler. What should I do first before bringing it home?

I adopted a stray tabby 2 years ago, best decision ever. First thing: bring it to a vet before letting it near your home fully. Get it checked for FIV/FeLV (the cat viruses), dewormed, treated for fleas, and start vaccinations. Budget around RM150-300 for the first vet visit and treatments, it adds up but necessary. Keep the kitten in a separate room away from your toddler until the vet clears it and fleas are gone. Also spay/neuter when it's old enough, very important to reduce strays. My cat was skittish for a week then settled in fine. Teach your toddler gentle handling and always supervise, a scared cat can scratch.

So sweet that you want to adopt! I've rescued a few strays. Before bringing home: vet check is a must, especially ringworm which is a fungal thing that can spread to kids, so that's the main toddler concern, get the vet to check the skin. Quarantine the kitten in one room for the first couple of weeks. Get flea treatment and deworming done. For a first-time owner, I'd also suggest joining a local Malaysian cat owner Facebook group, tons of advice on cheap vets and food. Toddlers and cats can coexist beautifully but always supervise and teach the kid not to pull tails. Also litter train early, it's easier than you think.
