How much should I budget for a puppy's first year vaccine and vet?
Just got a rescue puppy. Never had a dog before so no idea about the vaccine schedule and cost. Vet quoted me and I got a bit shock. Is it normal or kena mark up? What jabs are actually necessary?

Standard puppy protocol here: the DHPPi core vaccines given in 2-3 rounds a few weeks apart, plus rabies once old enough. Each visit roughly RM60-120 depending on clinic and area, KL clinics pricier than small town. Then deworming every few weeks when young, and if you plan to neuter that's a bigger one-off cost, few hundred. Realistically first year you may spend RM800 to RM1500 all in including food and a few checkups. Tip: some vets do a puppy package that bundles the jabs cheaper, ask. And keep the vaccine card, you need it for boarding, grooming and travel. It's a real commitment, so good you asking early. Please confirm the exact schedule with your own vet as it varies by the pup's age and health.

Rabies vaccine is not just for health, in Malaysia it's also a legal and licensing thing in many councils, so don't skip that one. I got my dog from a rescue and they'd done the first jab already, so ask your rescuer what's been done to avoid double paying. Also budget for tick and flea prevention, our weather memang tick heaven, my first dog kena tick fever and that treatment cost way more than prevention would have. Prevention cheaper than cure, betul.

Shop around a bit but don't choose vet purely on price. I learned the hard way, cheapest clinic near my house misdiagnosed my dog. Now I go to one slightly further that's more reliable. For vaccines any decent clinic fine, but build a relationship with one vet who knows your dog's history. And consider pet insurance is now available in Malaysia, might be worth it if you worried about big bills later.
