What's it like going through a Big 4 audit firm interview in KL as a fresh accounting grad?

I interviewed and joined one of the Big 4 audit line in KL three years ago, so here's the real flow. First round was HR plus a group assessment where they throw a business case and watch how you argue and listen, they're testing teamwork more than the 'right answer'. Second round was a manager one-to-one, and yes they asked technical: walk me through the audit of receivables, what's materiality, a bit of MFRS 15 revenue recognition. They also grilled 'why audit, why us' and I was honest that I wanted the training and the qualification pathway. Be prepared for the hours talk, they were upfront that busy season Jan to April means 10pm nights, starting pay was around RM2,900-3,300, and my honest advice is join for the two-three years of brand and ACCA support, then decide.

For the group assessment, don't be the loud one who talks over everyone, and don't be the silent one either. I've since sat on the other side helping assess, and we're literally noting who brings others in, who structures the discussion, who's just showing off. Contribute one or two solid points and help move the group to a conclusion within the time. Also dress properly, KL Big 4 still expect formal, cover the basics. Small things like being on time and greeting the receptionist politely get noticed more than you think.

Don't over-stress the technical, for fresh grads they know you won't be an expert, they want coachability. My interview was more behavioural: tell me a time you handled conflict in a group project, how do you cope under pressure, an example of managing a tight deadline. Use the STAR format properly, situation-task-action-result, the interviewers eat that up. I fumbled one accounting standard question and still got the offer because I stayed calm and reasoned it out loud. They'd rather have someone honest who says 'I'm not sure but here's how I'd find out' than someone who bluffs.

The part that shocked me was the aptitude and English test before the actual interview, some firms make you do online numerical and verbal reasoning first and people get filtered out there. Practise those, they're timed and stress you out if you go in cold. During the interview they also checked my CGPA and asked about my internship in detail, so know your own resume inside out. And please research the firm's recent news or a service line, I mentioned something about their advisory growth and the manager's face lit up. Small effort, big impression.
