Constant gastric pain and bloating, should I go government clinic or private GP in Malaysia and what to expect cost wise?

For the past two weeks I've had recurring gastric pain, bloating, and this burning feeling after eating, especially after mamak supper. I'm 29, work shifts so my meal times are all over the place. Should I go to a government klinik kesihatan or a private GP? Worried about the cost and the waiting time. Anyone dealt with chronic gastric can advise?

For recurring symptoms like yours over two weeks, do get it properly checked rather than self-medicating with Gaviscon forever, because burning after eating can be gastritis, acid reflux (GERD), or in some cases H. pylori infection which actually needs a specific antibiotic combo to clear. Cost-wise, a government klinik kesihatan charges just RM1 for citizens and can refer you to a hospital for a scope if needed, but expect to wait a few hours and possibly a long referral queue for the gastroscopy. A private GP visit runs about RM60 to RM120 including medication, much faster, and they can prescribe a PPI like omeprazole and test for H. pylori. My honest advice: start with a private GP to get quick relief and a proper assessment, and if they suspect something needing a scope, that's when the government hospital route makes sense to save on the expensive endoscopy. Meanwhile cut the mamak supper, teh tarik, and spicy stuff, shift work wrecking your meal timing is very likely the root cause.

Go government klinik kesihatan first, only RM1 and the doctors there see gastric cases all day long, very experienced. Yes you wait long, bring a power bank and be patient. If it's something serious they'll refer you to the GH for a scope for free basically. For young people on a budget this is the smart route.

Don't play-play with burning chest pain though, sometimes what feels like gastric can actually be something else. If the pain ever radiates to your arm or jaw, or you feel short of breath, go A&E immediately, don't assume it's just gastric. I'm not trying to scare you, just saying get it checked properly and don't keep tahan-ing it for weeks. Better safe.

Private GP is worth it for the speed if you can afford RM80 to RM100. I went to one near my office, got tested for H. pylori with a simple breath test, turned out positive, one week of antibiotics and my two-year gastric problem was gone. I wasted so long thinking it was just stress and diet. Ask your GP specifically about H. pylori testing.

Honestly your problem sounds very lifestyle-driven, shift work plus mamak supper is a classic combo for gastric. Before spending on doctors, try fixing the basics for two weeks: no eating within 3 hours of sleeping, cut coffee and teh tarik, smaller more frequent meals, and no lying down right after eating. A lot of my gastric disappeared once I stopped the 2am roti canai habit. If it still persists after that, then see a doctor.
