How to get my first freelance client with no portfolio or experience?
I want to freelance (design/writing) for extra income but chicken-and-egg problem, no client because no portfolio, no portfolio because no client. Local market also like prefer cheap. How did you all land your first paying client? Realistic tips please.

Classic problem, here's how I broke it. (1) Create your own portfolio without waiting for clients, do 3-5 self-initiated projects, redesign a local brand's bad flyer, write sample articles, mock up work for imaginary or real local businesses. Nobody checks if these were 'paid', they just want to see you can do the work. (2) Start with your network, tell friends, family, your kawan who runs a small biz (mamak, salon, online shop) that you'll do their poster/website copy cheap or free for testimonial and portfolio. Malaysian small businesses always need this. (3) Deliver amazing work for those first few, get a testimonial and permission to show it. (4) Then list on local FB freelance groups, and platforms, with actual samples to show. On the 'market prefer cheap' point, yes low-end is a race to the bottom, so aim slightly above the cheapest and compete on reliability and communication, that's what wins repeat clients here. First client is the hardest, after 2-3 happy clients referrals start flowing. Just start producing work now, don't wait for permission.

Don't undercharge to nothing though, 'free' for portfolio is fine for the first one or two only, after that value your time or clients will expect cheap forever. Package a clear offer (e.g. logo + 3 revisions for RM X) so clients know what they get. Keep every good piece and testimonial in a simple portfolio (even a free Canva/Notion page or IG). And be professional, contract or at least clear written scope and deposit, so you don't get taken advantage of. Consistency and reliability beat raw talent in landing repeat local clients.
My first client was literally my uncle's workshop, I did their Facebook page and a simple logo for cheap. That one job gave me screenshots and a testimonial, then his friend also asked me. Word of mouth strong in Malaysia especially among business owners who lepak same circle. So don't look down on small local jobs to start. Also join those freelance and SME FB groups, banyak people looking for affordable designer/writer there. Reply fast, deliver on time, that alone puts you above half the freelancers who ghost clients.
