The trick is do your homework first. Check the range on JobStreet and Glassdoor for that role and your years of experience. When they ask, give a range with your target near the bottom, like "based on my research and experience I'm looking at RM5.5k to RM6.5k, but open to discuss based on the full package". This way you anchor high but don't sound greedy. Never blurt a single number too early. If they push you to say first, flip it back: "may I know the budget range for this role, so we can align?" Many HR will actually tell you. And always calculate current gaji plus minimum 15 to 20 percent, otherwise why bother moving right.

Just ask 20 to 30 percent more than your current. HR expect to negotiate down anyway so start a bit high. If your current is 4k and you only ask 4.2k, you selling yourself way too cheap and they will happily take it.

Don't overthink lah. In Malaysia a lot of the time the company budget already fixed. Just give a reasonable range and focus on the total package, EPF rate, medical, bonus months, not only the basic. Some low basic but 4 months bonus better than high basic no bonus.

I always just tell them my expectation straight because I malas play games. Got rejected by some, but the ones who accept means they actually value me. Saves everybody time and I don't waste 3 rounds only to find out they cannot afford me.
