PTPTN repayment, better lump sum for discount or slow?

I owe about RM22k PTPTN. Heard there's a discount if I settle. Worth to hantam full or better to invest that money instead?

Do the comparison properly. PTPTN charges a relatively low "ujrah" (around 1 percent, much lower than commercial loans), and they periodically offer settlement discounts (full settlement discount has been around 10 to 15 percent during promotions). So the two options: (A) full settle RM22k during a discount period, save maybe RM2k to RM3k, and clear the debt from your DSR which helps future housing loan approval. (B) keep the RM22k, pay minimum monthly, and invest the lump sum in something returning more than 1 percent (ASB, EPF self-contribute, index fund all beat 1 percent). Purely on interest maths, investing wins because PTPTN charge is so low. BUT two catches: PTPTN affects your loan DSR when you apply for a house/car, and there's discipline risk (will you actually invest it or spend it?). If you buying a house soon, clearing it helps approval. If not, keep paying minimum and invest. Don't rush to settle a 1 percent debt if you got better use for the cash.

I settled mine during a discount promo purely for the peace of mind, tak suka ada hutang. Yes maybe I could earn more investing, but not owing anything and not having PTPTN drag my DSR when I applied for my house loan was worth it to me. Emotional decision but no regret.

Reminder the discount promos come and go, don't rush at full price. Wait for a settlement discount window (usually announced around Budget time), then hantam if you decide to settle. I saved a few hundred just by timing it. Follow PTPTN official page for announcements.

Whatever you do, at least pay the minimum on time and set up the auto salary deduction (SLAB/direct debit) if eligible, some get extra rebate for consistent payment. And clear it before applying for house loan, PTPTN default or high balance can affect your CCRIS and approval. Don't ignore it.
