ASB financing loan worth it or just invest cash slowly?

Bank keep offering ASB loan (pinjaman ASB) RM200k. They say ASB dividend higher than loan interest so profit. But taking loan to invest sounds scary. Anyone did ASB loan, actually make money or not?

I have an ASB loan for about 8 years now, here is the honest picture. The concept works IF the ASB dividend consistently beats your loan interest. In good years dividend was 6-7% and my loan around 4-5%, so I profited the spread. BUT dividends have trended down over the years while loan rates can rise with OPR, so the margin is thinner now than before. Key things I learned: only take an ASB loan if you can comfortably pay the monthly instalment from your salary even if dividend is low that year, dont rely on the dividend to service the loan. Treat it as forced long term savings with mild leverage, not a get rich scheme. It is low risk (ASB capital guaranteed, Bumiputera fund) so safer than most leveraged plays. Over 8 years I am net positive but it was not the jackpot the bank salesperson painted. Read the loan terms, watch the interest rate type, and dont overextend.

The math only works over a long horizon, minimum 10-15 years, because early years your instalment is mostly interest and the compounding needs time to shine. If you might need the cash out in a few years, dont do it. I did the loan young, set it and forget it, and by year 10 the units had grown nicely. Discipline is the real product, it forces you to invest monthly whether you like it or not.

One caution, the "guaranteed profit" pitch is oversold. If loan interest rises above dividend in a bad year, you are paying to hold it. Also note eligibility, ASB and the ASB loan are for Bumiputera. If you are not eligible, look at ASN or normal low cost index funds instead. Never borrow to invest in something volatile, ASB is only palatable because capital is guaranteed.

If you are risk averse or new to this, just invest cash slowly via monthly contribution, no loan. You sleep better with zero debt, and you still earn the ASB dividend on whatever you put in. The leveraged version amplifies both gains and stress. I chose the cash route and I am happy with steady growth, no bank breathing on me.
