Got promoted to team lead but only RM300 salary increment, is this normal in Malaysia or should I counter?
Been with my company almost 3 years, just got offered a promotion to team lead managing 5 people. The catch is the increment is only RM300, going from RM4,200 to RM4,500. I'm happy with the recognition but the extra responsibility for RM300 feels a bit ngam-ngam. Is this the normal rate for internal promotions in Malaysia, or am I underselling myself if I just accept?

RM300 for taking on people management is honestly on the low side and you have every right to counter, but do it with data not emotion. Pull up the JobStreet or Hays salary guide for team lead roles in your industry and location, most will show team leads earning 15 to 25 percent above senior executive, which on your base should be closer to RM5,000 to RM5,200. Go back and say you're excited about the role and want to make it work, then ask if there's flexibility to bring it in line with market rate for the added headcount responsibility. Frame it as wanting to commit long-term, not as a complaint. Worst case they say no and you've lost nothing, best case you get another few hundred which compounds every future increment.

Counter but be realistic, you're not going to double it. In my experience the sweet spot is asking for RM4,800 to RM5,000 and settling somewhere in the middle. Also negotiate a 6-month review instead of waiting a full year, so if you perform they revisit your pay sooner. Managing 5 people is real work, don't let them get it for cheap.

Before you counter, check what comes with the title beyond salary. Some companies give team leads extra bonus multipliers, higher medical coverage, or eligibility for the annual leadership training budget. RM300 base might look small but if your bonus goes from 1.5 months to 2.5 months that's a lot more per year. Ask HR for the full package breakdown in writing first.

Very normal in Malaysia unfortunately, internal promotions almost always give you a stingy bump because companies know you're less likely to leave. The real money is in the title, not the RM300. Take the promotion, do it well for one year, then use the team lead title to jump ship to another company for a 20 to 30 percent raise. That's how most Malaysians actually grow their pay, loyalty here rarely pays.

Honestly if you like the company and the people, RM300 plus a real leadership role isn't a bad deal for your career capital. Money isn't everything at this stage, the experience of managing a team is what will get you the big jumps later. Just make sure you're not being given all the responsibility with none of the authority, that's the trap. If they let you actually lead, take it.

I was in the exact same boat, RM250 increment for leading a team. I accepted because the market was bad that year and I needed the title on my resume. Two years later I moved to a competitor as a manager on RM6,800. So sometimes the smart move is to swallow the small increment, get the experience, and cash out later. Don't let the RM300 make you reject the growth opportunity.
