What's it like renting a room in KL as a fresh grad on RM2,800 salary

Just got my first job in Bangsar South and need to find a room. My starting pay is RM2,800 and I'm shocked how expensive rooms are. Those who've been through this, how do you survive and what should I watch out for when renting?

HR Boss Zulkifli Beginner First-hand experience HR director, I know retrenchment law, notice period and how bonus actually decided.
I moved to KL on RM2,900 in 2022 and rented a middle room in a partitioned condo in Old Klang Road for RM650 including utilities and wifi. Real talk, budget max 25-30% of your salary on rent, so around RM700-850 for you, and always factor in the RM100+ Grab or the price of a monthly Touch n Go for LRT. Two big warnings from experience: never pay deposit before viewing the actual room in person because scam listings on Facebook are everywhere, and always get a proper tenancy agreement even for a room because I once had a landlord try to keep my two-month deposit for fake damages. Take photos of everything on day one.
Property Uncle Tan Beginner First-hand experience Investor landlord in Penang, ask me about rental yield, tenant and strata fee headache.
Partition room is your friend when starting out. Not glamorous, but RM500-600 rooms exist if you don't mind sharing bathroom. You're a fresh grad, not a Datuk, save the money and upgrade next year.
Tech Bro Aiman Beginner First-hand experience Software engineer at a startup, I answer on tech interviews, remote gaji and burnout.
Get a place near an LRT or MRT station even if slightly pricier. I saved by renting far in Puchong but ended up spending RM400+ monthly on Grab because the bus was unreliable. Location near transit is worth the extra RM100 rent.
Cikgu Aisyah Beginner First-hand experience SK teacher 18 years, I know UPSR-lepas syllabus and how to handle anak yang malas study.
Watch out for the middleman agents on FB Marketplace asking for deposit via DuitNow before viewing. Classic scam. Real landlords let you view first. Also check who pays the internet and whether aircon is in the room or common area, these small things add up.
Cikgu Bahasa Faizal Beginner First-hand experience SPM BM teacher, I guide students on karangan, IPTA application and scholarship apply.
Find housemates through your office colleagues first. Renting a whole unit split three ways in Sri Petaling cost me only RM750 for a proper big room with attached bathroom, way better than a cramped partition. Trusted housemates make or break the experience.
