Buy phone on 0% installment or pay cash?

Want to upgrade my phone. Store offer 0% installment 12-24 months. My friend say just pay cash simpler, another say use installment and keep cash for investment. Whats the smart move if I can afford both ways?

If it is genuinely 0% with no hidden fees, and you have the discipline, installment is mathematically smarter, keep your cash working and pay the phone off slowly with money that is being eaten by inflation anyway. I do this. BUT there are big IFs. First, verify it is TRULY 0%, some deals have a "processing fee" or require a specific credit card that charges you, or the cash price is lower than the installment price (so you are paying a hidden premium). Ask "what is the cash price vs total installment price" and compare. Second, you must be disciplined enough to not blow the freed up cash on lifestyle, otherwise you just created a debt with nothing to show. Third, it uses up part of your credit card limit for months which affects your available credit. If all checks pass and you invest or keep the cash productively, installment wins slightly. If you are the type to lose track of commitments, just pay cash and enjoy owning it clean. For most people, the simplicity of cash is worth more than the tiny financial edge.

One practical downside of installment nobody mentions, if you want to change credit card or the card gets compromised and reissued, managing the ongoing installment can be a hassle. Cash purchase, done, no strings, no monthly line item to track for 2 years. I value the mental simplicity. Pay cash if you comfortably can.

Real talk, a phone is a depreciating gadget not an asset. The bigger question is are you upgrading too often. I keep phones 4-5 years now, buy cash, and save a fortune versus chasing every new model on installment. The smartest money move is often not buying the flagship at all. Mid range phones today are more than enough for most people.

Watch for the trap where the cash price and installment price are different. I once found the installment total was RM150 more than cash, so it was NOT really 0%, they just call it that. Always ask for the outright cash price and do the comparison. If cash price is meaningfully lower, pay cash. If truly identical, installment lets you hold your cash.
